CHALLENGES OF BEING A BOSS: Can you lead without losing your mind?

Being a boss, being alone? Loneliness when starting a business?

Being a boss has many rewards, but also many challenges. In this blog, we talk about the real challenges of being a boss that no one tells you about…

Being a boss sounds amazing. You’re in charge, you make the decisions, you’re the life of the party. But the truth is… it’s also crying silently when no one is watching. 😅 This post is 100% based on real events, from our experience as bosses at Escena Cuatro, and if you’re also leading a team, starting a business, or leading a project, you’ll definitely relate.

n this episode of our podcast, Escenas, we got honest about what being a boss really entails. So if you’re thinking about starting a business, you’ve already started one, or you just want to get a glimpse behind the scenes at a production company… welcome. 🎬💻

IS BEING A BOSS A LONELY EXPERIENCE? 🧍‍♂️🧍‍♀️

The quick answer: often, yes. Even with partners, a team, and all the good vibes in the world, being a boss means making decisions no one else can make. There are times when you feel misunderstood, alone, like that meme of the dog in the office surrounded by fire saying “this is fine.”

The toughest part is that you experience your biggest fears (which we’ll talk about in a moment) all by yourself, and if you don’t have anyone to share them with, they become giant monsters. But spoiler alert: even those monsters can be tamed if you have someone to talk to about them. 💬🤝

THE FEARS THAT HAUNT US AS BOSS 😨💸🤖

1. FEAR OF MONEY (OR THE LACK OF IT)

Didn’t we sell anything this month? How are we going to pay salaries? What if no one hires us anymore? Welcome to the club. Financial fear never goes away. You’re always thinking about how to make the money flow without you collapsing in the process.

2. FEAR OF FAILING A CLIENT

Delivering something and the client not loving it… hurts. Not because of ego (well, maybe a little), but because you want the client to be happy and recommend you. That fear of a mistake costing you your reputation weighs heavily. A lot.

3. FEAR OF BEING REPLACED (THANKS AI 😅)

Yes, we love technology, but it’s also scary. “What if one day AI does everything better than us?” It’s a real question. That’s why we’re learning to use AI as an ally, not a villain. But that fear of becoming “irrelevant” exists, and it’s okay to talk about it.

LEARNING ON THE GO 🚀

We’d never worked for another company before. We were born bosses without knowing what that meant. Everything has been 100% empirical: trial and error, trial and error. And that brings freedom (we do what we want) but also uncertainty (are we doing it right?).

Sometimes we feel like we’re adrift, with thousands of external opinions saying, “I would do it this way.”

IMPORTANT LESSONS LEARNED: LETTING GO OF CONTROL 👐✨

At first, you want to be involved in everything, checking every pixel, every correction. But that’s a sure recipe for burnout. The best thing we’ve done as bosses: learn to let go. Let the team grow, let others do it better than you, and become a facilitator, not a know-it-all.

THE PART OF LEADERSHIP NO ONE TELLS YOU 👀

  1. Being a boss often means being alone.
  2. You’re going to make mistakes. A thousand times.
  3. Everyone has an opinion, but no one lives by your decisions.
  4. There’s no diploma for keeping the company going.
  5. Yes, you’ll want to give up… but you keep going.

THE BEAUTY EXISTS TOO ❤️

Seeing your team grow, seeing an idea become something real, seeing you survive each month… it’s beautiful. It’s not all drama. There’s satisfaction, pride, and moments where you say, “Wow, we created this.” And it’s worth it.
